| Blue & Gold |
The Blue & Gold Macaw (Ara ararauna), also known as Blue & Yellow Macaw, can reach 76-86 cm long and weigh 900 to 1300 g and are vivid in appearance with blue wings and tail, golden (some might say, "butterscotch") underparts and a green cap on the head. Their beaks are jet black and very strong for crushing nuts. |
| Greenwing |
Greenwing macaws are prized for their beauty and personality. Lively and intelligent, they are easy to train - a favorite choice for people who want a bird that will readily pick up on games and tricks. Like most great show-offs, though, they can be a little overbearing: Boisterous to a fault, they can be downright loud. They can also be destructive, and, when provoked, can be nippy. While some do learn to speak, most macaws have limited ability to mimic. |
| Scarlet |
The Scarlet Macaw is about 81 to 96 cm (32 to 36 inches) long, of which more than half is the pointed, graduated tail typical of macaws. Average weight is about a kilogram (2 to 2.5 pounds). The plumage is mostly scarlet, but the rump and tail-covert feathers are light blue, the greater upperwing coverts are yellow, the upper sides of the flight feathers of the wings are dark blue as are the ends of the tail feathers, and the undersides of the wing and tail flight feathers are dark red with metallic gold iridescence. There is bare white skin around the eye and from there to the bill. The upper mandible is mostly pale horn in color and the lower is black. Sexes are alike; the only difference between ages is that young birds have dark eyes, and adults have light yellow eyes. |
| Red-Fronted |
A red-fronted macaw has really soft silky feathers with a different feel to them than that of the other macaws.
At 450 – 600 grams and 21” to 22” in length, a red-front is the perfect size. With a small sized body and a wingspan of 32” to 34” these guys can fly! Their ability to fly is unequalled in the world of parrots! |
| Harlequin |
The Harlequin Macaw is a hybrid produced by breeding a Green Wing Macaw and a Blue and Gold Macaw. If the male of the pair is a Green Wing, the offspring will generally inherit the physical build and size of the Green Wing with much of the coloring on the back and head similar to that of the Blue and Gold. The feathers of the chest are a red-orange edged with yellow-orange. Depending on the cross of Green Wing macaw male to Blue and Gold Macaw female, or Blue and Gold Macaw male to Green Wing Macaw female, a Harlequin Macaw can look very similar, if not identical, to a Catalina Macaw. Generally, the male is a Green Wing because female Green Wing macaws are more difficult to find than Blue and Gold females. For this reason, Harlequin Macaws usually have a larger build and head than a Catalina Macaw(see below), and the chest color is more of a red-orange than the yellow-orange of the Catalina Macaw(see below). |
| Catalina |
The Catalina macaw is a hybrid produced by crossing a Scarlet Macaw and a Blue and Gold Macaw, and is a hybrid that occurs naturally in the wild. Generally, the female of the pair is the Blue and Gold, since Scarlet macaw females are more difficult to locate. The Catalina macaw usually has a yellow-orange chest with green on the top of the head and green to green-blue, with shadings of orange, on the back of the neck and back. The Catalina Macaws have a long tapered tail similar to that of the Scarlet Macaw. Since the Catalina Macaws look very similar to the Harlequin Macaw, one is sometimes confused for the other. |
| Hyacinth |
The Hyacinth Macaw has a solid blue body of feathers, similar to the color of indigo. It has a solid black beak with bright yellow along the sides of the lower part of the beak and circling its solid dark eyes. Unlike other species of macaw, it does not have a white patch of featherless skin around the eye. The female and male are nearly indistinguishable, although the female is typically a bit more slender. These birds grow to a total length of 100 cm and weigh 1.4-1.7 kg. The wingspan is 130-150 cm. |
| Miligold |
This bird is a combination of a Blue & Gold Macaw and a Military Macaw. These birds are rather large, up to 27 inches in body length, though not the largest among other parrots. These birds are very communicative and should spend much time in the same room with people, not in a cage. The miligold macaw is great house pet; pictures and photos cannot demonstrate their appealing temperament. |
| Military |
Military macaws ( Ara militaris) are among the largest parrots. These lively, boisterous birds are often overlooked as plain-colored compared to the more brilliantly colored macaws. But, as with other macaws, military macaws are very intelligent and relatively easy to train. They are a favorite for shows and trick training.
Military macaws are mostly green with a bright red frontal patch. Though similar to Buffon's macaws(see below), military macaws are a bit smaller and have a darker forest green color. The naked facial skin, which blushes when the macaw is excited, is white with black feather lines. |
| Buffon |
The Buffon's Macaw , also called the Great Green Macaw(Ara ambiguus) is a Central American parrot found in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador. Great Green Macaws are green, with a reddish forehead and pale blue lower back, rump and upper tail cover feathers. Tail is brownish red tipped with very pale blue. |
| Shamrock |
Shamrock Macaws are a very colorful hybrid Macaw. A Shamrock macaw is a cross between a Military and a Scarlet macaw. Otono is a full size Macaw and has learned to speak several phrases including: hello, hello love, goodbye, pretty bird, and "how are ya". A full sized Shamrock macaw, they can get over 2 lbs. |
| Ruby |
The Ruby Macaw is a hybrid produced by crossing a Green Wing Macaw and a Scarlet Macaw. If the male of the pair is a Green Wing, the offspring will generally have the size, in body and head, of the Green Wing. The green band of feathers in the middle of the wings will have varying amounts of orange and yellow, and some of the band feathers will also be edged or lined with shades of yellow and orange. The coloring can vary somewhat from one bird to another even in babies from the same clutch. Feather lines on the face are evident, but they are normally thinner than those of the Green Wing. |
| Camelot |
A Camelot Macaw is a second generation hybrid cross between a Scarlet & a Catalina Macaw. (A Catalina is a first generation hybrid of a Scarlet x Blue & Gold Macaw). Camelot Macaws come in a diverse array of colors, even though it is often incorrectly assumed that they are all predominantly yellow. This is simply not so, nor is it even close to the truth. The color variation of the Camelot offspring depends largely on the genetics of the parents. Yellow dominant Camelot macaws happen to be the exception, not the rule. There is no authenticated method that I know of at this time to calculate what coloration the offspring will be. Camelot Macaws are often red dominant with green markings on their backs. No matter what their color, most Camelot Macaws also have a green nape. Only about 1 in 5 are born orange or yellow dominant, with considerable variation in shade & color. |
